What are Positive Affirmations?

Affirmations work by the power of positive thinking and not by magic. It will surely work for you if you are an optimistic person. Affirmations make people receptive to change and also assist in making the change a reality.

In this article, I will discuss the concept behind this practice and how it would benefit you.

Let’s get started!

Positive Affirmations Definition

Positive affirmations are positive statements or mantras that instill feelings of positivity and happiness while helping to change thoughts and attitudes. Positive affirmations also describe a specific outcome or who you want to be. It is straightforward and easy to practice. All you have to do is pick a positive phrase and repeat it to yourself over and again. Eventually, these positive affirmations would become your reality.

Although studies have shown that affirmations are a psychological effect, people still believe it’s magical. Unfortunately, it isn’t. The self-affirmation theory helps us to understand we can maintain a cheerful composure by saying what we repeatedly believe (Steele, 1988).

Does Positive Affirmations Work?

Sometimes we fear failure so much that we magnify the tasks ahead of us. We always think of the worst that can happen. These thoughts continue to grow and make us relent. As a result, we end up losing many opportunities.

Even when we fail to achieve our goals, we feel success may not be in our genes. Well, that’s not true. The issue is with your mind, and this is why saying a positive word of affirmation to yourself would help. Affirmations are not “wishful thinking.” But a deliberate exercise. This mental practice can help in changing your thought patterns to the extent you begin to do things differently.

Research has shown that affirmations improve work performance. For example, when you’re facing a challenge, spending time thinking of how you’re in control of the situation will calm your nerves. It would help you think clearly. In that way, you can find a solution in no time.

Another study has shown that affirmations can help you deal with stress effectively. Even if you have low self-esteem, saying these affirmative words will help you out.

The more you tell yourself what you’re capable of, the more you’re likely to improve in any area. In time, you’ll find yourself doing things you once considered difficult.

Positive affirmations benefits

You might be thinking of the values and benefits that positive affirmations have. Primarily, they are used to eliminate limiting beliefs. If you take on the exercise and use affirmations regularly, you will also discover that they change the way you think.

Below are the importance of saying affirmations to yourself:

It motivates you to take action

As you continue affirming positive beliefs, it will become a habit. You can’t make affirmations for long, and you won’t feel like taking steps. In the end, you will achieve your goals. You will find out that you no longer hesitate in telling the world what you do. You’ll be aware of your strengths and discover a way to use them too.

It raises your inner voice

The voice in your head may not always be in your favor. Sometimes, it limits or stops you from doing good things giving you the mentality that you’re not fit enough. It can go as far as making you feel that you can’t amount to anything in life.

Affirmation is one of the ways you can make your inner voice louder than your critics

It makes you concentrate on your goals

Without proper concentration and focus, you may lose sight of your goal. With affirmations, you’re constantly reminding yourself of what you tend to gain if you chase your goals. As you do this, you’ll find it easier to create time and actualize your goals.

It makes you feel grateful and contented

Feeling happy and contented make us joyous and fall in love with life. Affirmation helps us to see those things. It reminds us that we’re not perfect and yet, we become grateful in our current state. It could have been worse. We also notice our flaws and affirm that we can make a change.

It improves our health

Have you considered adding affirmation to your weight-loss routine? You should. It encourages you to continue your journey to a healthy life. Affirmations can also help in building your energy levels.

When your mind is filled with positive thoughts, your concern will be about your health and well-being.

How to use affirmations

What are positive affirmations and how to use them

Step 1: Make a list of your negative thoughts

Simply put, write out all your negative thoughts. Do you remember how bad you felt when you were not given constructive criticism? How about the time you were told you’re not capable? It doesn’t matter if they were right or wrong. We’re not perfect anyways. Add them to the list. Now, state how you feel from that experience. If you think of yourself as “slow” or “unworthy”, write it down.

Step 2: Write a positive list from the negative thoughts

You may need to have a dictionary for this one. Using the previous negative thoughts you have written out, write some positive words. For example, write “I’m worth it” in place of “unworthy”. Like I said, if you’re having problems with coming up with the right words, use your dictionary. You could also ask your close friends for suggestions on the best words to use.

Step 3: Speak your affirmations

Believe me, you need to take these affirmations like a dose of drug – 3 times a day. The best way to do this is to look at yourself in the mirror as you say these statements. You can also do this by writing your affirmations momentarily in a journal. In that way, you’re practicing mindfulness towards your goals. If you’re looking for more tips, you can check my website.

Step 4: Get support if you need to

Understand this: Sometimes, you may not need to do this alone. You may need people who have your best interest at heart. Ask your mother or a close friend for help. These people would make you stay on track. Ensure you’re comfortable with them and you’re good to go.

Aside from making statements, you can take some courses from reliable sources. Now it’s true that YouTube has a lot of videos concerning this, but it’s never enough. Look for platforms that have the solutions to your problems. It is for your interest.
